There is the Kent County Archives in Maidstone and the Sussex County Archives near Brighton which both hold a large amount of historical records and data. There is a National Archives site that you can search on-line. Some villages also have Historical Societies that can also be helpful.
Evans Family in Hawkhurst

I am researching my family history and wondered if anyone knows anything about the Evans family that lived in Hawkhurst in the 16 and 1700s. They were amongst other things Clothiers and Overseers.
Many thanks,

Hi Caroline,
Thanks for your reply to my message. I will give you a little bit of background on Emma Smith and her family. Emma was born in Bexhill in 1824 the youngest daughter of Peter Smith and Rebecca Waters. Peter Smith was a Publican and ran the Bell Inn at Bexhill. Peter Smith was the Publican at the time of the Battle of Sidley Green which was a fight between smugglers and the Excise men. He was called as a witness but I am not sure if he ever had to give evidence in Court as the defendants decided to plead guilty and as a result they were transported to Australia rather than being hung. Peter Smiths family came from Herstmonceux where they were Innkeepers and tradesmen.
If you want to know any more just let me know.
Cheers,
Trevor
